National Centre for Biological Sciences/NCBS,Bangalore/Research Fellowship/SEPT.,2011

Research Fellow
Those who have qualified in the CSIR/ICMR examination and would like to join NCBS as junior research fellows must have a clear idea of their research interests. If their research interests match with those of our research faculty, please do contact them directly.  M.Sc/B.E./B.Tech candidates also can contact the research faculty directly. They will be supported by the Project Incharge's research grants, if selected.
JRFs are not ordinarily allowed to register for a degree. If a Junior Research Fellows wants to register for a degree, they should apply in response to advertisements appearing nationally in Augsut/September every year. If the selected candidate features on the waiting list for admission, (s)he can register for a degree while working on the grant. (S)he will be treated on par with students paid from NCBS funds. Once registered for a degree, the JRF will be subject to all the academic requirements that NCBS-paid students are.
Candidates on the Integrated PhD wait list can register for the MSc by research degree at TIFR Deemed University if a faculty member supports from his/her research grants.
Junior Research Fellows will be provided accommodation depending on the availability; otherwise they have to make their own arrangement for accommodation.

National Centre for Biological Sciences/NCBS,Bangalore/Postdoctoral Opportunities/SEPT.,2011

Postdoctoral Opportunities at NCBS
Attracting the best postdoctoral scientists to a vibrant research environment

NCBS has a small but vibrant program for researchers who have a PhD degree.  We seek to enhance this program substantially. The purpose of the research program is to bring the best young scientists to a stimulating intellectual environment where the best facilities are available. We expect that this will result in excellent science and the opportunity for maturing to move on to independent positions in the best places in India and abroad.
There are several funding modes for these postdoctoral programs. These programs do not lead to a continuing appointment and have a fixed maximum term.  Applicants will be expected to identify a host laboratory and submit a preliminary application written in conjunction with the host faculty member.
Appointments on all funding modes – regardless of the source of support – will be renewed on a yearly basis and will be contingent on continued support by the host laboratory at NCBS. Renewals will be recommended by the Postdoctoral Committee, which will base its assessment on the Annual Work Report provided by the Fellow, the Annual Work Seminar and independent assessments provided by the laboratory head and one other member of the Faculty at NCBS or member of the Postdoctoral Committee.   If a Fellow’s performance does not meet the scientific standards at NCBS, the institute reserves the right to end the fellow’s appointment regardless of the source of funding.

National Centre for Biological Sciences/NCBS,Bangalore/PhD Program

National Centre for Biological Sciences
PhD Program
The PhD program at NCBS accepts candidates with a Masters in any Basic Science discipline or a basic degree in any applied science such as Medicine, Engineering, Pharmacy and Veterinary Science. Candidates are invited to apply in response to advertisements issued by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai appearing nationally in the last week of August/first week of September every year. All applicants are required to take a written test conducted in December.  Candidates who have qualified the CSIR/ICMR/Gate exam are also required to apply for this entrance test for admission to the PhD program at NCBS.
The test assesses basic analytical skills and +2 level mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. There is no specified syllabus, nor do we give out sample question papers. NCBS sends out an application package to students who qualify the written test for the next phase of the selection procedure.  Performance in the written test, together with the information requested in the application package is used to short-list candidates for interviews at Bangalore in May/June. Interviews typically comprise two rounds. The details of these will be provided to candidates short-listed for the interviews.  The new academic year begins in August. Students are eligible to register for a PhD at the TIFR Deemed University typically 1.5-2 years from the date of joining, after meeting coursework requirements and passing a comprehensive examination.
NCBS offers state-of-the art facilities for modern biology (see, Research Infrastructure at http://www.ncbs.res.in) and comfortable housing for students selected into the program. Student life at NCBS is enriched by a range of seminars, meetings and workshops. This provides opportunities for our students, to interact with students and faculty from other research institutions and Universities in the country and abroad. Student participation in international meetings and workshops both within the country and outside is actively encouraged with every effort made to provide full or partial support for travel. NCBS offers an in-house course program to its graduate students, which is supplemented by international courses conducted on our campus. We also have active collaborative research programs involving student exchanges, with laboratories across the world.
Our research programs cover a wide range of disciplines (New NCBS Website - Faculty), including Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, including Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Chemical Biology, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Evolutionary Biology, Ecology and Neuroscience. In addition, we actively encourage research initiatives that span multiple disciplines including the physical sciences. Such interactions have led to the establishment of the Integrated Biology (iBio) program (see Academic Programs, NCBS web site). This initiative encourages students with backgrounds in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics to apply their knowledge to understanding concepts in biology. Preference for this program is indicated at the time of the interviews. More recently, we have initiated joint programs with medical schools in the country. Our ties with the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore on whose campus we are located, remain strong with ongoing research collaborations. With the energy of youth and the vigorous admixture of inputs from diverse backgrounds, the Centre is kept in ferment, receptive of new ideas and striving to build on accomplishments.
