MKU-NRCBS Visiting Fellowships 
NETWORKING RESOURCE CENTRE IN 
BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

Applications are invited from research scholars, post-docs, young faculty members and scientists 
of Indian Universities / Research Institutions for the Visiting Fellowship throughout the year to 
conduct advanced research in Biological Sciences.    
   
Fellowships are provided to the selected candidates for furtherance of their research and research 
capabilities for carrying out collaborative research or utilizing facilities not available in their own   
institutions. These fellowships will be given for a minimum period of one month to a maximum 
of 3 months to conduct research in the Networking Resource Centre in Biological Sciences, 
School of Biological Sciences, Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai.  
The fellowship is Rs.5000/- per month, which can  be availed in addition to the scholar’s / 
scientist's own fellowship / salary from their parent institution. The candidate is also eligible for 
Travel allowances as per our university regulations.  
Application & Selection Procedure: Application can be downloaded from the official website 
the centre (www.mkunrcbs.org or www.genomicmku.org). The applicants should provide a brief 
outline of their plan of work along with their bio-data highlighting their achievements. 
Candidates should submit two sets of application on the prescribed  format and forwarded 
through proper channel to the Coordinator, NRCBS programme, School of Biological Sciences, 
Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai – 625 021. The selected candidates will be communicated 
preferably through E-mail or by post. The candidates are expected to join within one month of 
the notification of the selection.

FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMMES FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRY SCIENTISTS (OTHER THAN INDIANS)
INSA JRD-TATA FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME

Indian National Science Academy, a premier scientific organization in India representing all branches of Science and Technology, has instituted the INSA-JRD TATA FELLOWSHIP administered by CICS in honour of the late JRD Tata, visionary and a leading industrialist. The purpose of this Fellowship is to extend facilities of the advanced scientific infrastructure and expertise of India to scientists and researchers of developing countries. The Fellowship established from an Endowment received from Sir Dorabji Tata Trust will foster advanced research training of scientists from the developing world and promote south-south co-operation.

The Fellowship is intended for researchers(Nationals) from developing countries except India, who have aptitude for research and would be desirous of working in an Indian research laboratory for a maximum period of 3 months. Applicants possessing Doctorate or Master’s Degree in Science or equivalent degree in Engineering/Medicine and allied disciplines
below 45 years of age may apply.

The fellowship covers 1) cost of return airfare from place of work in their home country to place of work in India 2) maintenance allowance and incidentals for three months, 3) accommodation to be provided by the host institute either free of cost or at nominal charges and 4) contingency grant for purchase of books and stationery.

Selection is based on the recommendations of a Committee consisting of eminent scientists. The committee meets twice a year during May and November. Applications received before 30 April will be scrutinized during the first meeting and the applications received before 31 October will be scrutinized during second meeting every year.

      DST SPONSORED RESEARCH TRAINING FELLOWSHIP FOR DEVELOPING COUNTRY SCIENTISTS (RTFDCS)

    The Fellowship is intended for researchers(Nationals) from developing countries (Except India), Asia/Africa/Latin America/Arab region who have aptitude for research and would be desirous of working in an Indian research laboratory for a minimum period of 3 months upto a maximum period of 12 months. Applicants possessing Doctorate or Master’s Degree in Science or equivalent degree in Engineering/Medicine and allied disciplines
    , below 40 years of age, with aptitude for research, and interested in acquiring expertise in research related tools may apply. The applicant should preferably be attached to a national research institution in his/her country.

    The Fellowship programme covers economy class return airfare from place of work in their home country to place of work in India, boarding and lodging allowance and contingency allowance within which participation in one conference within India is permissible.

    Selection is based on the recommendations of a Committee consisting of eminent scientists. The committee meets twice a year during May and November. Applications received before 30 April will be scrutinized during the first meeting and the applications received before 31 October will be scrutinized during second meeting every year.

        JNCASR-CICS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME

      This fellowship programme is jointly instituted by the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR )  Bangalore and the Centre for International Co-operation in Science(CICS), Chennai to encourage mobility of scientists from developing countries.  The Fellowship covers short-term research, training or participatory research work in physical, chemical or biological sciences in reputed scientific institutions in India including JNCASR.

      Applicant must be a scientist, teacher or a research scholar affiliated to a scientific or academic institution in a developing country in Asia (other than India), Africa, Latin America and Arab region. The duration of the fellowship is for 3 months.

       The fellowship covers a) international return air fare by the shortest route by economy class from the place of work of the candidate at his/her country to the host institution in India, b) boarding, lodging (for the individual only) at the affiliated institution and other subsistence expenses in the form of an adequate allowance in Indian currency.  Applicants below 45 years of age are eligible to apply .
       DBT-TWAS BIOTECHNOLOGY FELLOWSHIPS FOR RESEARCHERS FROM DEVELOPING COUNTRIES(OTHER THAN INDIA)
        CICS is the coordinating agency on behalf of Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India for the execution of DBT-TWAS  Postgraduate and Postdoctoral Biotechnology Fellowships for Researchers from Developing Countries.
        POSTGRADUATE BIOTECHNOLOGY FELLOWSHIPS
        The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of India and (TWAS), the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World are instituting Biotechnology Fellowships for researchers from developing countries who wish to pursue research leading towards Ph.D in newly emerging areas of biotechnology for which facilities are available in the Laboratories/institutes in India.  The fellowships will be tenable in eminent institutes in India.
        Candidates from developing countries such as Asia (other than India)/Africa/Latin America /Arab region with minimum qualification of Master’s in Science or equivalent degree in Engineering/Medicine below 30 years are eligible to apply. Duration of the fellowship will be up to 5 years for Full-time Fellowships (for those willing to register for a Ph.D in India), and for a minimum period of 12 months and a maximum period of 2 years for Sandwich Fellowships (for those already registered for a Ph.D in their home country). 
        Selection will be made by a Committee constituted by TWAS.  The cost of international travel will be met by TWAS, the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World. DBT will provide a monthly stipend to cover for living costs, food and health insurance. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency. In addition, the fellowship holder will receive a house rent allowance. CICS will facilitate placement of candidates at Universities/institutes of eminence in India.

        POST-DOCTORAL BIOTECHNOLOGY FELLOWSHIPS

        The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of India and TWAS, the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World are instituting Biotechnology Fellowships for researchers from developing countries who wish to pursue research in newly emerging areas in Biotechnology at institutes of Excellence in India.
        Candidates from developing countries such as Asia (other than India)/Africa/Latin America /Arab region with minimum qualification of Ph.D degree in Biosciences or Biotechnology below the age of 40 are eligible to apply.  Duration of the fellowship will be for 12-18 months. The candidate should be a regular employee in a developing country and should be holding a research assignment to be undertaken in India.
        Selection will be made by a Committee constituted by TWAS.  The cost of international travel will be met by TWAS, the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World. DBT will provide a monthly stipend to cover for living costs, food and health insurance. The monthly stipend will not be convertible into foreign currency. In addition, the fellowship holder will receive a house rent allowance.  CICS will facilitate placement of candidates for training at Indian institutes of eminence.

       Under this scheme, innovative technologies are to be disseminated by educational / 
      research institutions of our state through training / workshop / awareness program for the 
      benefit of target groups such as farmers, fishermen & women, self help group members and 
      others. A sum of Rs.50,000/- may be provided for one programme with beneficiaries of about 
      50 to 100 with a duration of 3-5 days. The proposals may be submitted to “The Member 
      Secretary, Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology DOTE Campus,  
      Chennai - 600 025” on or before 28.10.2011.

      TAMILNADU SCIENTISTS AWARD (TANSA) - 2011

      The  Tamilnadu  State  Council  for  Science  and  Technology recognizes every year the 
      outstanding research work / skill/ talent acquired by Scientists and Technologists in the following 
      disciplines:  (i)   Agricultural Sciences;  (ii)  Biological Sciences;  (iii)  Chemical Sciences;  (iv) 
      Environmental Sciences including Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean and Planetary Sciences; (v) Engineering 
      and Technology; (vi) Home/ Social Sciences; (vii)  Mathematical Sciences; (viii) Medical Sciences; (ix) 
      Physical Sciences and (x) Veterinary Sciences by  an award called `Tamilnadu Scientist Award’ 
      (TANSA). 

      The Award will be bestowed on a person who, has made conspicuously important and
      outstanding contribution to human knowledge and progress – fundamental  or applied in the particular
      field of the endeavour.

      Eligibility Criteria:

      Any native of Tamilnadu engaged in research/  innovation/ feat in any  field of science and
      technology in Tamilnadu is eligible to apply for TANSA award.  The TANSA will be awarded on the
      basis of research contributions made/skill/talent acquired in Tamilnadu during the ten years preceding
      the year of award.

      Details of the Award:  The award carries a cash of Rs.10,000/- and a citation.

      Nomination:

      Nominations of suitable candidates who fulfill the eligibility criteria are invited for
      TANSA-2011.   Following categories of people are authorized to nominate

      (i) Vice Chancellor of Univer s ities , Dean of Science, Agriculture, Engineering and
      Technology, Medical Faculties and Veterinary Sciences

      (ii) Directors, Deans of the faculties of institutions deemed to be of University status

      (iii) Directors of national organizations such as CLRI, CECRI and other research organizations
      (Public & Private) situated in the State of Tamilnadu.

      (iv) Directors of the Technical/ Medical/ Collegiate/ School Education/ Head of the Institution

      (v) Directors of reputed industries such as BHEL, SPIC, NLC, MRL, IMTI, IHH etc

      The nominating authorities are requested to verify the claims made by the applicants before
      nominating their candidature for the consideration of TANSA.

      Selection:

      Advisory Committees comprising of experts will be constituted for the award in each 
      discipline.  The award in  specific discipline may be withheld by the Council in any year, if, in the 
      opinion of the Advisory Committee, no sufficiently meritorious candidate is forthcoming in that year.

      Application  in bound form with full particulars  along with DD for Rs.200/- and other enclosures may
