We offer educational degrees at First Degree (Undergraduate), Higher Degree (Graduate) and Doctoral Levels. At the Higher Degree level, we offer M.E., M.Pharm, MBA and MPH Programmes.

MBA

Our management programme namely Master of Management Studies (MMS) has been designed with a difference and sets up a strong foundation in Science & Engineering. Based on feedback from industry, a new MBA programme has been formulated with input requirement as first degree of BITS or its equivalent. The programme will train and equip students with scientific and engineering approach to business administration. Students will also have a exposure to business critical modern technologies. The programme is designed to be flexible and have a very strong component of industry project experience. The programme is principally aimed at students already possessing an engineering degree. Students with other qualifications like B.Sc., B.A., B.Com. may also apply provided they have the requisite aptitude towards training in science, mathematics and technology. The requirements of the programme will necessitate such students to spend additional time which may vary from 1 to 4 semesters depending upon their qualifications. For students not having an engineering degree, the course requirement will be worked out, looking at the earlier training on a case-by-case basis at the time of admission.

On Campus Ph.D

The doctoral thesis is an integral component of the Ph.D. degree programme. It carries a minimum of 40 units to be usually collected in four semesters. Ph.D. students can register for the Thesis course only after passing the Qualifying Examination and after approval of their topic of research and supervisor by the Research Board.
We offer aspiring doctorates the flexibility to pursue the thesis either campus or at Practice School Centres and in certain circumstances even at other specific centres.

Features and components

(i) Types of Input
While the preferred input is a Higher Degree of BITS or its equivalent, our Academic Regulations do permit the admission of students with only a first degree from our institute or its equivalent and also of students between these two extremes. Additionally, professionals of high standing and proven practical competence equivalent to the course-work of a higher degree can also be considered for admission. In such cases competence will be evaluated through considering published papers, technical reports, etc.
(ii) Qualifying Examination
Every student admitted to On-Campus Ph.D. must pass the Qualifying Examination. The exam is based on the courses of a higher degree programme, which the candidate has earlier pursued or on named courses from higher degree programmes from our institute. The Qualifying Examination tests the student's knowledge, grasp of fundamentals and ability to apply them in novel situations. The exam is designed to be equivalent to the standard, content and intent of the comprehensive examination of the named courses.
Admission to On-campus Ph.D. programme is provisional in the first instance and is confirmed only after passing the Qualifying Examination within the prescribed time. Candidates who are unable to pass the Qualifying Examination within the prescribed time are automatically discontinued from the programme.
(iii) Seminar
In the majority of cases a Ph.D. student registers every semester in a Seminar course or in the In-dependent Study course.
(iv) Course Work
The detailed list of the various courses that are mandatory or optional for Ph.D. students are described in the Academic Regulations. In the majority of cases, this course work consists of courses which are required to be completed for a higher degree programme at our institute. The Qualifying Examination is also conducted on the basis of these courses. Departure from these normal situations is described in the Academic Regulations.
(v) Teaching Practice
There are two courses of Teaching Practice mandatory for every Ph.D. student. These courses attempt to train the students in the art, methodology and skill of teaching. Alternatively, Dean R & C may permit a student to register in Practice Lecture Series courses.
(vi) Language Requirement
A foreign language can be prescribed as an eligibility requirement for a Ph.D. only when the supervisor and/or the Dean Research & Consultancy have made recommendations for the same for a particular topic of research. Every recommendation must be ratified and accepted by the Research Board.
A Ph.D. student for whom foreign language is prescribed is expected to demonstrate an ability to translate a piece from current periodicals in one of the modern European languages into English with the help of a dictionary.
In most cases English or an Indian language, as the case may be will suffice as choice of language.
(vii) Fellowships and Scholarships
All students admitted to Ph.D. Programme normally bring one or other fellowship from outside sources such as UGC, CSIR, MNES, Nokia etc. However, we have ample resources intended to take care of needs not covered by these sources.

TEACHING
The roots of education are bitter but the fruit is sweet.              [Aristotle]

The AIIMS offers various courses at different levels. All in all 42 disciplines are taught at AIIMS. The different categories include :
    Undergraduate Courses (UG)
    Postgraduate Courses (PG)
    MBBSMD,MS & MDS
    B.Sc.(Hons.)Human Biology:DM & MCh
B.Sc.Courses in Nursing, Audiometry,Ophthalmic, Techniques and RadiographyMaster's Degree in Science (M Sc)
Master's Degree in Biotechnology (M Biotech)
     Doctor of Philosophy (Ph D)
Undergraduate Courses
MBBS
50 students are admitted each year to the MBBS course of AIIMS. Our MBBS students are a carefully selected group of remarkably able and intelligent students committed to a high
sustained hard work is the norm. What they need is only  a little guidance along the path to knowledge. All efforts are made to keep their  initiative and curiosity alive by making them active participants in the teaching-learning  process. They also have an opportunity to stretch their minds with research during their vacations. The faculty is willing and eager to provide vent to the wealth of ideas and energy available with this endless stream of extremely curious and committed young people. However, since they skills for the being are trained for practicing medicine, we ensure that they do acquire the purpose. Further, the science and craft of medicine should be  accompanied by a  humane approach to illness. To inculcate the necessary empathy in our students, our curriculum extends beyond medicine, and encroaches on science and  psychology. In short, undergraduate medical education is a blend of several streams of competing, and sometimes conflicting, endeavours. We try and make the blend as  harmonious as We wish to produce competent and caring doctors while at the same time stimulating the creative abilities of our students It is not surprising that  AIIMS was judged the best medical in India in the INDIA TODAY-ORG-MARG poll conducted in 1997.

B.Sc.(Hons.) Human Biology:
AIIMS is the only institution in the country running a B Sc (Hons) course in Human Biology. This course is aimed at producing a group highly proficient young scientists well-versed in basic medical and modern biological techniques. Some of these graduates may eventually fill teaching positions in medical schools in the basic medical sciences. In addition, they are also expected to be tomorrow's leaders in research, specially in emerging  fields like biotechnology and molecular biology.

B.Sc. Courses in Nursing, Audiometry, Ophthalmic, Techniques and Radiography:
These undergraduate courses are designed to produce well quailed
personnel without whom no health care team can be complete.

Postgraduate Courses

All postgraduate students in AIIMS are potential teachers and research workers. Hence during their stay at the Institute, they not only acquire competence in a branch of medicine or surgery, but they also savor the romance of teaching and research. The  small pieces of research which postgraduate students complete are treated as  guided  introduction  to  the   painfully slow and  tedious process of discovery. AIIMS is also one of the pioneers in initiating an in-service  training  programme  for postgraduate students. Residents, while providing patient care, also get formal training and education towards their degrees. At present the Institute awards postgraduate degrees in 55 different specialties.
DM & MCh:

AIIMS also offers superspecialty courses in a large number of medical and surgical disciplines (DM and MCh respectively such as):

CardiologyGastroenterology
Cardiothoracic  SurgeryEndocrinology
NeurologyNephrology
NeurosurgeryNedical oncology
Pediatric Surgery
Master's degree in Biotechnology (M Biotech):
This two year course was started in 1986. This new venture in an emerging discipline has been designed to produce a cadre of scientists required for highly specialized areas such as vaccine production.
Doctor of Philosophy
Ph D students conduct an extensive piece of research of high quality on which they may take upto 5 years.  While in MD/MS and M Sc/M Biotech courses the emphasis is on breadth, in Ph D the emphasis is on depth. The students delve deep into a narrow area to which they may stick for a lifetime.
