Kerala Science Congress (KSC) / KSCSTE and Rubber Board at Kottayam during 29th to 31st January 2012.

The Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) as the umbrella organization of the research establishments in the State, in its effort to take stock of significant research developments during the year, organises the annual Kerala Science Congress, to revitalize R&D in the state and to identify new talents in scientific research in Kerala. The 24th session of the Kerala Science Congress (KSC) will be organized jointly by KSCSTE and Rubber Board at Kottayam during 29th to 31st January 2012.

Realising the critical role of Science and Technology in socio-economic development, Kerala has made substantial efforts to strengthen its science base through a number of research and development initiatives. In almost every key sector, whether it is agriculture, forestry, fisheries, industry, transport, environment, energy, material sciences, there are top class institutions undertaking research relevant to the needs of the State. Every sphere of science as well as the different phases of research – basic, strategic, applied and adaptive - are being addressed by the Universities and the R&D institutions in the State. Being a state with high population density and limited natural resources, wise use of the resources and building up human skills are essential.

The 24th Kerala Science Congress will have a number of sessions for providing an opportunity for intense interaction and knowledge sharing. General papers, contest papers and posters in the identified subject areas will be included. Particular thrust will be given to encourage young researchers through Young Scientist Awards and Children’s Science Congress. KSC will also provide a platform for interaction and exchange of ideas between scientists and young researchers working in different parts of the country.

Dark Matter Could Transfer Energy in the Sun
“We assume that the dark matter particles interact weakly with the Sun’s atoms, and what we have done is calculate at what level these interactions can occur, in order to better describe the structure and evolution of the Sun,” Marco Taoso, researcher at the IFIC, a combined centre of the Spanish National Research Council and the University of Valencia, explains.
The astrophysical observations suggest that our galaxy is situated in a halo of dark matter particles. According to the models, some of these particles, the WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles) interact weakly with other normal ones, such as atoms, and could be building up on the inside of stars. The study, recently published in the journal Physical Review D, carries out an in-depth study of the case of the Sun in particular.

Many Coastal Wetlands Likely to Disappear This Century, Scientists Say
U.S. Geological Survey scientists made this conclusion from an international research modeling effort published December 1 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, a publication of the American Geophysical Union. Scientists identified conditions under which coastal wetlands could survive rising sea level.
Using a rapid sea-level rise scenario, most coastal wetlands worldwide will disappear near the end of the 21st century. In contrast, under the slow sea-level rise projection, wetlands with low sediment availability and low tidal ranges are vulnerable and may drown. However, in the slow sea-level rise projection, wetlands with higher sediment availability would be more likely to survive.

CESS,Thiruvananthapuram/Earth Science News Earth Has Run out of Room to Expand Fisheries/ 2011

Earth Science News

Earth Has Run out of Room to Expand Fisheries
In collaboration with the National Geographic Society and published in the online journal PLoS ONE, the study is the first to measure the spatial expansion of global fisheries. It reveals that fisheries expanded at a rate of one million sq. kilometres per year from the 1950s to the end of the 1970s. The rate of expansion more than tripled in the 1980s and early 1990s — to roughly the size of Brazil’s Amazon rain forest every year.
Between 1950 and 2005, the spatial expansion of fisheries started from the coastal waters off the North Atlantic and Northwest Pacific, reached into the high seas and southward into the Southern Hemisphere at a rate of almost one degree latitude per year. It was accompanied by a nearly five-fold increase in catch, from 19 million tonnes in 1950, to a peak of 90 million tonnes in the late 1980s, and dropping to 87 million tonnes in 2005, according to the study.

CESS, Akkulam, Trivandrum/NATIONAL BRAINSTORMING WORKSHOP ON PHILOSOPHY AND RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN GEOGRAPHY/ Nov.,2011

CESS Events

NATIONAL BRAINSTORMING WORKSHOP ON PHILOSOPHY AND RESEARCH METHODOLOGY IN GEOGRAPHY
Venue: CESS, Akkulam, Trivandrum
Dates: 7-8 December, 2011
The subject of Geography is witnessing significant changes in philosophy and research methodology during last fifty years. In recent years, there are several areas in which geography finds its application, especially in the field of spatial analysis. Utility potential of the subject increased tremendously with technological advancement in mapping science particularly with advent of remote sensing and GIS, and increasing realization among the larger society that map is an important medium of communication. However, there is hardly any deliberation, particularly in India, to link philosophy and methodology of geography. Having a porous boundary, geography continuously exchanges ideas and share theory and methods with other disciplines. Therefore, cross disciplinary deliberations are important for proper growth and development of the subject.
Through this brainstorming workshop we propose to initiate such debates among geographers and other researchers from allied disciplines like geology and economics. This brainstorming workshop is being organized (i) to deliberate on recent developments in philosophy and methodology in geography, (ii) to exchange ideas among the selected senior and young geographers-academicians, professionals and scholars across India (iii) to trace future course of developments in the subject, and (iv) to work out a research training module for young professionals and research scholars.
Workshop will consist of five technical sessions on viz., Philosophy of Geography,Critical geography, Interdisciplinary nature of geography, Research methods and tools in geography, and Geography and society.
Participants include eminent geographers of the country like Prof. L S Bhat, Prof. K R Dikshit, Prof. P S Tiwari, Prof. Baleshwar Thakur, Prof. H S Sharma, Prof. H R Betal, Prof. Swapna Banerjee Guha, Prof M H Qureshi, Prof. Sukla Bhaduri, Prof. Ranjan Basu, Prof. Suryakant, Prof. Nina Singh, Prof. Anu Kapur Dr. V Raghavswamy, Prof. M S Nathawat, Prof. Sheela Prasad, Prof. Rana P B Singh, Dr. Ravi S Singh, Dr. Devendra Naik, Dr. R. Anil Kumar, and Dr. Nandakumar
Convenor: Dr. Srikumar Chattopadhyay; email: srikumarc53@gmail.com, and
