Preface
The Department of Chemistry is one of first five departments
established by the Shivaji University in 1964. It offers
programs such as M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees. The
Department is one of the best for its teaching and research
activities. The department is recognized by pharmaceutical
industries as a producer of the scientific man power. The
alumni of the department are holding the higher positions in
National Laboratories, Institutions and Universities of our
country as well as abroad. The department is supported by
Department of Science and Technology (DST) under FIST
program and by University Grant Commission (UGC) under
SAP-DRS program. The research work carried in the
department is of international status with total number of
publications so far are 1500. The faculty of the department are
reviewers for the national and international journals. The total
number of major research projects completed by the faculty in
last five years is fifteen.
The research thrust areas of the chemistry department
relies in: the development of new Synthetic Methodologies,
Green Chemistry, Material Science, Photochemistry, Catalysis,
Nanomaterial, Nanosensing & Separation science to provide
common platform for researchers as well as students to know
& discuss the current trends, recent developments and future
perspectives in these research areas. The Department of
Chemistry is organizing, “National Seminar on Recent
Advances in Synthetic Chemistry & Nanomaterials” (RASCN-
2012) during January 21 & 22 2012. The organizing
committee of this seminar takes immense pleasure in inviting
researchers & students working at various universities &
research institution, engaged in basic as well as applied
research, to actively participate in this conference. The
technical program of the conference will be divided in six
session spread over two days. The session would include
plenary lecture by invited speakers from various reputed
institute like IIT’s, IISc Bangalore, C-MET, BARC, CSIR
laboratories and Universities followed by Oral & Poster
presentation in following areas

Shivaji University, established in 1962, is named after the
Great Maratha Warrior and founder of the Maratha empire
Chhatrapati Shivaji. It was inaugurated on 18th November,
1962 by Dr. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India.. The
jurisdiction of the University is spread over three districts viz.
Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara with strength of about 2,00,000
students studying in 225 affiliated colleges and recognized
institutes. Under the innovative and socially reformist
leadership of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, the princely ruler of
Kolhapur, the city at the beginning ofthis century
a focal point of educational opportunities for all classes and
communities of South-Western Maharastra, and northern
parts ofneighbouring Karnataka.
Kolhapur possesses historical as well as mythological
importance. It is known as Dakshin Kashi on account of its
deity Mahalaxmai and famous for center of art, education,
sports, leather goods, films and sugarcane industries. There
are several attractive tourist places like Panhala fort, ancient
temple and Wild life Sanctuaries. It is well connected by train,
road & air. The city has pleasant climate in the month of
January.

Mumbai, The two Mumbai Campuses of TISS, the Main Campus and the Malti and Jal A.D. Naoroji Campus Annexe, are both located in Deonar in the North-East Section of Greater Mumbai. The Main Campus is situated opposite the Deonar Bus Depot on V.N. Purav Marg (earlier known as the Sion-Trombay Road ).
The Main Campus, on approximately 10 acres, houses the Schools of Social Work, and Health Systems Studies, a part of the School of Social Sciences as well as the Independent Centres of Lifelong Education, Media and Cultural Studies, and Research Methodology. The Sir Dorabji Tata Memorial Library, Computer Centre, the Publications Unit and the Administrative offices are also located on this Campus.
The Malti and Jal A.D. Naoroji Campus Annexe, is located off V.N. Purav Marg. The Naoroji Campus Annexe is next to the BARC Hospital Gate on Deonar Farms Road. This Campus of 11.05 acres presently houses the Schools of Management and Labour Studies, the Centre for Development Studies of the School of Social Sciences, the IITB TISS School of Habitat Studies and Planning and the Jamsetji Tata Centre for Disaster Management.
