HIV is primarily transmitted through sexual route. Efforts are being made to develop therapeutics as well as prevention of HIV/AIDS. In the absence of any therapeutics, prevention of HIV transmission has been considered to be the most effective strategy for the control of HIV/AIDS. Towards this Pre Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), barrier methods, abstinence, circumcision and microbicides have been found to be the effective methods for prevention of sexual transmission of HIV. Studies and trails are being conducted to establish the acceptability and efficacy of these methods. The efforts are being made to develop effective microbicides for prevention of sexual transmission of HIV and possibly other sexually transmitted infections as well. Towards this number of candidate microbicides have been and are being tested. Suitability and acceptability of other methods like circumcision, PrEP, barrier methods are also being evaluated.

The symposium on Prevention of Sexual Transmission of HIV will be organized jointly by National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health (NIRRH) and Microbicide Society of India (MSI) from January 9-10, 2012, in Mumbai. The symposium is expected to address the challenges on development of vaccine, microbicides and other methods for prevention of sexual transmission of HIV. The deliberations during the symposium will provide the information about the policies, guidelines and clinical trails for development of candidate vaccine and microbicides, circumcision, Pre Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) in India and other countries. The symposium will offer an opportunity for oral presentation by investigators as well as policy makers associated with designing and implementation of strategies for prevention of sexual transmission of HIV. Opportunity will also be provided to young investigators to participate in the symposium and present the posters of their research efforts in prevention of sexual transmission of HIV.
On behalf of NIRRH and MSI, I am pleased to invite you to actively participate in the symposium and contribute towards defining a more focused and comprehensive research goal to thwart the pandemic of HIV/AIDS.
