Institute life sciences
Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) is a premier research organization founded through a public–private partnership initiative in the year 2004. The partners in the making of ILS are
- Government of Andhra Pradesh ( State Government )
- University of Hyderabad ( A Central University )
- Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Limited (Private sector)
Incorporated as a not-for-profit company, ILS has been accorded recognition as a Scientific & Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by the Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt of India.
ILS has been conceived as a world-class research organization to pursue both basic and applied research in life sciences and to bridge the gap between industry and academia. Thus, ILS intends to pursue industry sponsored research as well as basic research centered around in-house ideas.
MISSION
The mission of ILS is to ‘find solutions to improve human health through the application of cutting-edge research in integrated disciplines of life sciences.’
CORE VALUES

At the core of ILS are a set of values that are the pillars of strength for the institution and its people. These values are
- Scientific Excellence and Innovation
- Intellectual freedom.
- Continuous Learning in a spirit of team work.
- Integrity in every aspect of the institute
- Quality focus
OBJECTIVES
Central to the objectives of ILS is to advance life sciences through the pursuit of interdisciplinary research with a purpose. As ILS seeks to focus its research towards providing solutions to improve human health, the objectives broadly are:
- To understand molecular mechanisms of diseases
- To translate this knowledge into novel therapies
- To integrate chemical , biological and other applied sciences in pursuit of the mission
- To meet the growing scientific challenges of Life Sciences Industry through cutting edge research with emphasis on focus areas as follows
- Cancer
- Infectious Diseases
- Metabolic Disorders
- Cardiovascular Diseases
DELIVERABLES
In pursuit of these objectives, ILS hopes to bring forward scientific output that will help accomplish the following:
- Advance frontiers of science by generating new knowledge, including valuable intellectual property.
- Develop new concepts and tools for use in drug discovery
- Provide solutions to specific problems faced by industry and society
- Develop high quality human resource for pursuit of advanced research in life sciences.
RESEARCH CENTER & INFRASTRUCTURE
The ILS Research Center is being established on a 20Acre site within the campus of the University of Hyderabad, Gachibowli, Hyderabad, India. The Center is planned as a modular laboratory complex spread over a built-up area of 130,000sft comprising state-of-art laboratories and facilities as follows:
- 32 Research Labs and 12 Support Labs
- Knowledge Center and Library
- Auditorium & Meeting rooms
- Animal House & Preclinical Biology Labs
- Elaborate infrastructure, including an Executive Block and Engineering Maintenance, and IT Support, Cafeteria and Recreation Facilities.
The creation of the laboratory complex and infrastructure is being funded by Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories and Govt of Andhra Pradesh
The first laboratory module comprising 12 research labs and 4 support labs has been inaugurated on January 29, 2007. Few key scientists have already joined while others are being recruited on top priority. Scientific work in this lab module is expected to begin in the first half of April 2007, while the finishing, furnishing and equipping the rest of the lab modules will continue. The entire research center complex is expected to be operational in the second half of 2008.
IPM & TECH TRANSFER
ILS is planning to establish an Intellectual Property Management Cell to help recognize and protect new research results of inventive nature by filing and prosecuting patent applications. The IPM Cell will also help scientists with prior art search and current awareness in specific areas of interest to ILS.
Similarly, ILS is also planning a Technology Transfer Cell to help establish contacts with industry and provide interface with funding agencies and scientific community.
COLLABORATION & ALLIANCES
ILS recognizes the need for interactions with other research organizations in order to enhance its research productivity. ILS therefore seeks to forge collaborative links and alliances with:
- National / International research institutions, universities and academia.
- ndustry , in particular the pharma and biotech sectors
- Government and multilateral organizations
Such linkages will help ILS in the development of:
- Collaborative knowledge
- Joint research programs
- Frame work for joint seminars & conferences
- Institutional networks
FUNDING SOURCES
Being a public–private partnership research organization recognized as a SIRO, ILS is eligible to seek competitive research grants from Govt Agencies. In addition, ILS seeks participation, involvement and funding from:
- Private Sector Pharma / Biotech Industries
- Philanthropic Organizations
- Science / Research Foundations.
